Is It Safe to Clean My Registry?

The registry is collection of files that maintain a list of settings for both the operating system (Windows, 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista) and the software that runs on it. Every time you use your computer, the registry is either referenced or updated in some way. As you install/uninstall software on your system, the registry entries associated with this software sometimes does not get cleaned up.

This creates confusion for your system as it has more and more entries to look through causing it to slow down every time it needs to do a lookup. By cleaning the registry, these invalid entries are removed therefore decreasing the time it takes for your system to search the registry.

Updating the registry manually is not a best practice. However, cleaning your registry is not as scary as it sounds. With the use of a registry cleaning tool, you can safely scan your system without fear of reprisal and remove these invalid entries to improve your system’s performance. In fact, registry scanning is something that should be done at regular intervals in order to keep your PC running at peak performance.

Note: Do not attempt to clean your registry without first making a backup. See this article for information on how to perform a backup.
