What is the Windows Registry?

About the Windows Registry

The Windows Registry is the central nervous system of your Windows computer. It contains information and settings necessary for running Windows and the software that you run on it. Anytime a user makes a change, either through the Control Panel, Internet Explorer, or other installed software, these changes are recorded and saved within the registry.

The information in the registry is stored within several hidden system files that Windows loads into memory when the operating system starts. Windows along with other user installed software uses the registry to load settings necessary for the application to function. Without the registry, Windows would be unable to function.

Why Things Go Wrong

As you use your PC, the Registry can become corrupt. Typical causes of a corrupt Windows registry are:

  • Installation and Uninstallation of software
  • Software that did not install/uninstall correctly
  • Installation or removal of hardware devices
  • Unused or corrupt device drivers
  • Viruses, spyware, adware

When corruption occurs, it can be almost impossible to find the source of the error on your own. Although you might be able to correct the problem manually, it is not recommended. Your best investment at this point is to use a registry repair utility and have your registry repaired within seconds.

Registry Repair Software

Registry repair software takes the guess work out of troubleshooting by scanning your entire registry for incorrect, invalid, or corrupt keys. This software also gives you the option of automatically fixing any errors that are found or selectively scanning based on your own criteria. Additional features for this type of software may include:

  • Suggested fixes for performance improvements
  • Scheduled scans
  • Backup and restore of your registry
  • Browser management features
  • Registry compression and defragmentation
